Just before Christmas, we popped in to see Paula Stockley to catch up on the incredible work she continues to do through The Rucksack Appeal Swansea.
As another winter settles in, it felt like the right moment to reflect on a project that quietly makes a huge difference to people experiencing homelessness across the city.
Paula has been running the appeal since 2016, coordinating the collection and distribution of rucksacks filled with essential items for people who are sleeping rough or without secure accommodation. Winter is always the toughest time.
“Cold weather makes everything harder,” Paula told us during our visit. “The aim is simply to help people get through it with some warmth, dignity, and practical support.”

What Goes Into Each Rucksack

Each rucksack is carefully packed with items chosen specifically for winter conditions, including:
  • Hats, gloves, and scarves
  • Toiletries
  • Hoodies and warm socks
  • Sleeping bags
  • A small festive selection pack
  • Other essentials to help people cope with the cold
They’re practical, thoughtful, and put together with real care.

Growing Year on Year

What started as a winter-only appeal has grown into a year-round effort. Paula now provides rucksacks in both summer and winter, adapting the contents to suit the season.
“In previous winters we’d usually put together around 20 to 22 rucksacks, and 40 to 50 in the summer,” she explained. “This year we’re aiming for over 100.”
Rucksacks are made available through local support hubs, including Matt’s Cafe and Zac’s Place in Neath, among others.

Ongoing Support

Peter Lynn and Partners Solicitors have been proud supporters of The Rucksack Appeal since 2017, after Paula first approached the firm for help.
Senior Partner Peter Lynn reflected on the long-standing involvement:
“When Paula came to us all those years ago, we could see immediately how much good this would do. We’ve supported the appeal every year since and remain incredibly proud to do so.”

How You Can Help

The appeal relies heavily on donations and community support. Anyone who would like to contribute can do so through Paula’s JustGiving page:

As Swansea moves through another cold winter, it’s heartening to see what can be achieved when local people, businesses, and organisations come together. A simple rucksack can mean warmth, comfort, and a reminder that someone cares.
