Businesses Beware! Consumer Protection Rights Increased

Written by Peter Lynn

The Consumer Protection Regulations 2014 came into force on the 1st October 2014. This gives consumers the statutory right to unwind sales contracts, claim refunds, compensation and discounts when they have been the victim of some form of aggressive and misleading sales practice.
As of the 1st October, consumers have up to 90 days to make a claim. If the product or service has not been used, a full refund may be claimed or if the items have been partly or fully used a discount will be due. Depending on the severity of the practices such a discount could be between 25% and 100%.
Businesses, particularly those with direct sales staff, should look at their selling practices and train staff appropriately if they are not to find themselves dealing with a series of expensive complaints.
