Parental Leave Extension

March 8th this year saw the implementation of the extension of an employee’s right to request unpaid parental leave which will now be extended by a further 5 weeks per child.
An employee is entitled to take parental leave from 13 weeks to 18 weeks as from today. The changes have been quietly introduced via subordinate legislation and entitle a parent or adopting parent to take up to 18 weeks of unpaid leave for each child which can be taken up to the child 5th birthday (or 18th birthday in respect of adoptions after 1999 or disabled child).
